Everything you Need to Know About Cotton Cycling Caps

Cotton caps are a cheap, stylish & practical accessory. Known traditionally in France as a casquette, MrCyclingWorld is a proud provider of boutique cycling caps. We have a few tips for cap owners to help answer the questions you never wanted to ask…

SIZING

Typically, most cycling caps are considered “one size fits most”. There is no adjustable buckle at the rear, generally just a simple elastic rear. In realistic terms, those with a head of more than 61cm will struggle to wear a cycling cap.

More often than not, yes a cotton cycling cap will fit under your helmet.

CARE

As a rule, your cycling cap should be washed after all wears. Some say to machine wash your cap is ok, we here at mrcyclingworld strongly advise against this! Instead you should gently hand wash your cap in cold water – it only takes 2 minutes after your post-ride shower. The brim and tyvek ribons sometimes used are delicate, hand washing your cap helps ensures its longevity.

To dry your cap let it hang in the shade.

“NEW TECHNOLOGIES”

Some manufacturers out there are experimenting with fully sublimated polyester cycling caps. In MrCyclingWorld’s extensive experience these look great for about a day or two but nothing beats a screen printed cotton cap. Having said that, it’s only a matter of time before someone gets the formula right and that will be a great thing for everybody. Until then, stick to traditional cotton caps.

PODIUM CAPS

Podium caps, worn on the podium no doubt!

Podium caps, worn on the podium no doubt!

Podium caps are basically a baseball-style cap with team sponsors logos on it. Generally not worn while riding, they are worn mostly by cyclists after an event during an interview or on the champion’s podium (hence it’s name!).

Podium caps are very different to cotton cycling caps in that they are made from a heavier material and often (but not always!) have an adjustable strap at the rear, as with most baseball-style caps.
