Are Cycling Computers Waterproof?

Dear mrcyclingworld, I was interested in buying one of your speedos and wondered if they are waterproof?

Hi & thanks for the question. Most cycling speedos (including Garmin, Cateye etc) are “highly weather resistant” in the sense that they are designed to withstand environmental conditions you might incur while cycling, such as rain, fog, snow, humidity, etc. However, since the computer head units cannot be completely submerged, they are not technically “waterproof”. Hope this is helpful!

According to Cinelli themselves, a standard set of handlebar tape is 175cm long and 30mm wide. Enough to cover most road handlebars

Who Does Our Website?

On the odd occasion we do get asked by passer by’s something along the lines of “You’re website is ok but it’s not brilliant, I think you should look at getting a new web designer, it might help!”.

While we appreciate all constructive feedback and do take it on board, the truth is that we do our own website. So while our site may not be as fancy as ninemsn, as flash as cyclingnews, or as simple as Twitter, the reality is that we’re not professional web designers or IT experts, we are a professional internet cycling retailer (and wholesaler). While we might have the occasional web visitor email us and ask why our website isn’t as good as perhaps it could be, we’ve never had a single complaint from a customer about the time, effort and focus we put into delivering the best products & service possible.

So we might suck at being website designers, but we take pride in our products & customer service.

The Mapei Hatrick – 1996

Picture this. A fine, still but crisp Sunday morning. A typical French spring morning. It’s April 1996. The Northern European Spring Classics remain a mystery to most of the anglophones around the world, referring to their copy of English magazines that are distributed to the newspaper stalls many months after the races have come and gone. Twitter, Facebook and even for that matter Google hadn’t even been heard of in these days. Yes my friends, 1996 seems ancient times.

With still two hours of racing to go an incredible move is made off the front of the peloton that most of us could only dream of. Three Mapei-GB teammates roll away by themselves. They would never be caught, and the finish would be one of the most talked about issues in world cycling.

The Belgian Lion of Flanders, Johan Museeuw rolled across the finishing line unchallenged with his Italian colleagues, Gianluca Bortolami and Andrea Tafi drifting in behind.

The infamous Mapei Paris-Roubaix hat-trick, 1996

There was clearly some tension amongst the Mapei-ers in the approach to the line on the Roubaix velodrome, but a dream had come true. Three Mapei men on the podium. A Mapei hatrick.

And in case that wasn’t enough to cement the legend that is, mapei repeated the effort in 1998 and again in 1999, each time with different riders at the helm.

Legendary stuff.

RIP Franco Ballerini

It is with great sadness this morning that we learn of the death of the great Italian, Franco Ballerini, at age only 45. The two-time winner of Paris-Roubaix, Ballerini died in a car rally accident on the weekend, the complete details of which are still unknown.

France Ballerini wins Paris-Roubaix in 1998, ahead of two of his Mapei teammates.

Best known for his days in the super-squadra of Mapei, Ballerini was the ultimate pro, with timeless class. One of the hardmen of Italian cyclismo, he will be sorely missed.

"Merci Roubiax." Merci Franco!

He joins the list of cycling champions who have died recently:

Former Molteni rider & Eddy Merckx teammate Vic can Schil (Belgium)
Another former Mapei star, the Belgian Frank Vandenbroucke
Six day star Dimitri De Fauw, also of Belgium

What Does it Take to Field a Pro Cycling Team?

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes in the world of professional cycling? This is the time of year all the new kits are released, all the fancy gear is finalised as the teams get ready for the first race of the season, the Tour Down Under in Adelaide.

But well before now things need to be accounted for. Each team water bottle that is thrown in the final kilometres into the crowd to make a souvenir for someone has to be ordered well in advance. But how many does a team go through each year? Well here’s some stats of the 28 strong Garmin-Transitions team, with thanks to a recent article on Velonews…

Hungry anyone? A team of professional cyclists requires enough calories to send a rich man broke!

The team will chew their way through 700 Vittoria tubular tyres in a year (yes that’s about 2 a day!)
100 bikes by Felt
200 Mavic wheels
30000 Clif bars & energy gels
315kg of energy drink powder ( basic maths = approx 1kg per day!)
200 tubes of chamois cream
2500 musettes
22,000 Camelbak Podium water bottles (yep, 785 per rider)

No wonder the riders throw their bidon out towards the end of each stage of the Tour de France. There’s plenty more where that came from!

As for kit, each rider receives their kit from Pearl Izumi; 12 pair of bib knicks and 6/7 jerseys for the start of the racing season. More kit follows as the team races more and more throughout the season. And don’t forget the winter jackets, tights, gloves, caps, overshoes, helmets, shoes, etc etc.

Logistical nightmare? You bet! Every young cyclists’ dream to be looked after like this? Absolutely!

It’s hard to believe that 365 days ago we launched mrcyclingworld on eBay. Sure we’d sold the odd thing here or there, had some fun with it. But this time last year we sat down and decided to get serious, and suddenly “mrcyclingworld” was born! Of course we have grown astonishingly in such a short time. It’s quite clear we are starting to promote our website as it becomes bigger & more user-friendly than eBay, but of course for the moment we are still on both.

Interestingly, we had a quick check this morning on eBay Pulse, and were pleased to know that we are now recognised as the third biggest cycling seller on eBay.com.au. Rad!

Colnago White Men Can’t Jump Cap

Sometimes we come across things that we just won’t sell. I mean we just can’t. One such item landed on our desk earlier this week, a certain Colnago cap.

Now any die hard Colnago fan out there knows that this is no ordinary Colnago cap. This is the style that was worn by Wesley Snipes in the 1992 movie White Men Can’t Jump.

Wesley Snipes wears the Colnago cap in the hit movie "White Men Can't Jump". The cap is now a rare collectors item.

Agreed, it’s not the sexiest of cycling caps we’ve come across, but when there’s a certain aura over just one cap we can’t resist but hold onto it, slip it onto the front of the mantle piece, gaze at it for a while, and keep it there.

Recently we have been in contact with the Italian cap factory, who have confirmed that sadly Colnago would not agree to reproduce any more. With that being said the cap that landed on our desk earlier this week is definitely not for sale, this is a collectors item this particular collector won’t be putting a price tag on – sorry guys!
