These have not been easy to find, and we are proudly the only ones to be holding this in stock in Australia! That’s right, you cannot find them anywhere else!

Our normal supplier in Italy simply told us it was impossible to get them. Unlike most teams, BMC – or perhaps more specifically Hincapie Sportswear, the manufacturer – did not get them made out of the factory well known to produce them in Italy. Instead they were made in Colombia. Interesting we thought. So it lead us on a chase. And eventually one of our contacts found a limited number for us to sell to you guys!

Cycling Base Layers. A cooling effect or not?

An interesting discussion has developed on the CyclingNews.com “gear” (no, not doping) forum. The thread is entitled “Cooler with or without base layer?“. Essentially it questions manufacturers claims that wearing an undershirt will make you cooler in hot conditions than if you weren’t wearing one. And a fair question too.

When we developed our mesh base layer, we designed it to be as lightweight and with the best cooling mechanism possible. We looked at other base layers such as those made by Castelli, Vermarc and Craft and we feel we could make something that was just a touch lighter and of course better on the hip pocket

Essentially the idea on the design is described briefly but succinctly by forum user “justme“. He/she says:

In a hot humid climate too much water can be present on the body which can actually make the core temperature rise to try and burn it off. In some cases the moisture in the air can condense on your body and add even more to the water. In a case like this wicking it away from the skin is the best.

Spot on!

Some people mistakenly confuse these lightweight mesh base layers as an item that will soak the sweat up. This is not true. It is not the design of the base layer and it would not work if it was. One thing you don’t want when climbing a tough mountain is a sponge under your jersey, carrying all of the sweat you’ve produced! Could you imagine?

An Australian World Champion, Winning a Spring Classic? Well I Never

There is something special about the World Champion winning a race. I mean, it should happen of course, but it doesn’t seem to happen often enough.

So this morning when we woke up to the news that Cadel Evans had won the hilly Belgian classic Fleche Wallonne, I nearly dropped off my seat. A world champion, winning a Belgian spring classic and it’s an Aussie? AWESOME!

Paris Roubaix. Queen of the Classics, Hell of the North

Tonight (Australian-time) is the night of the legendary one day race, Paris-Roubaix. Keeping pace with the best on Paris-Roubaix is not within the reach of just any old rider. The Hell of the North is a race for specialists. It is only tamed by the hard, painless, powerful and skillful, who have pinpointed the event as one of their objectives for the season.

Of course, it wont be a day out for everyone…

Look Out For…

Of course any one of the 27 pave (cobblestoned) sectors of the race are great. The race’s official website has a full preview of each. One of the most famous is the 2.4km long Trouée d’Arenberg at about “only” 100km to go. Coincidentally, the live race coverage tends to start at about then. Typically one of the top 20 riders to come out of that section will be the winner.

Each section has a rating out of 5 for difficulty. Arenberg you ask? Why that’s naturally!

And if you’ve ever had the “pleasure” of riding over a section of pave, you know how hard it can be. And if you haven’t… well you’re missing out!

The race is so high intense even when watching it on TV you feel like there’s no time to get yourself top-up of frites (French-fries) and Westmalle (Belgian beer). Little wonder it’s so popular!

Predictions anyone?

You just need to check out Twitter to see that everyone has their own ideas. Of course Fabian Cancellara and Tom Boonen remain the outright favourites, but if you like to pick a roughie why not Johan van Summeren. The boy’s got talent, a history of top ten’s and of course he is Belgian – based on history being Belgian is a very important factor in winning this race!

This year the lanky 6ft 5in rider is kitted out by Garmin-Transitions… Keep your eyes and ears open for him.

Public Holidays & Deliveries – Easter 2010
